Prosecutors say man called 911 after allegedly killing Climax woman and her dog

A man is now charged with homicide in Kalamazoo County after police say he allegedly killed a woman and her dog.

Adam Lyons faced a judge Tuesday after he was arrested at a home in Climax on Saturday.

He is charged with murder, killing an animal and two counts of weapons offences. If convicted on all four counts, he could spend the rest of his life behind bars.

Probable cause documents say Lyons called police Saturday night from North Main Street saying he had shot someone and was going to kill himself.

In this call, he also allegedly threatened law enforcement agencies.

Officers found Nicole Doerschler inside the home with a gunshot wound to the head and discovered that the Cane Corso dog had also been shot in the head, authorities said.

Two firearms were found in Lyons, along with several others at the home, the documents state.

“In incidents like this, we see a family relationship that ends up with one person killing another,” said Kalamazoo County District Attorney Jeff Getting. “Unfortunately, this is very common in our community and across the state, across the country.”

A motive in the case is not yet known, and Chief Assistant Prosecutor Jeffrey Williams said he was not aware of any protective order from Doerschler against Lyons.

Judge Alice Parker-LaGrone denied Lyons bail at his arraignment.

Lyons is scheduled to appear in court again on Nov. 7 for a probable cause hearing.
