Man accused of shooting at Tempe DNC office charged with terrorism

PHOENIX (AZ Family) — The suspect who was shot multiple times at an East Valley Democratic office has been indicted by a grand jury on charges including terrorism, the Maricopa County District Attorney’s Office announced Wednesday.

District Attorney Rachel Mitchell said Jeffrey Michael Kelly was charged in connection with three separate shootings at the office of the Democratic National Committee near South Avenue and Priest Drive in Tempe.

Kelly faces one count of terrorism, three counts of discharging a firearm into a building, three counts of unlawful use of a firearm and one count of criminal damage.

Tempe police say Kelly shot into the building between Sept. 16 and Oct. 6. Authorities say he first used a gas-powered pistol and then a firearm. During the three gunfights, Kelly allegedly fired more than twenty times, damaging the building’s windows, front doors and walls.

Court documents showed that there were dozens of rifles, thousands of rounds of ammunition and a grenade launcher reportedly left Kelly’s home. Authorities recovered 120 weapons, including AR-style rifles, 250,000 rounds of ammunition, silencers, scopes, body armor and dummy grenades.

In addition, Kelly is also accused of fastening bags with white powder and applied blades to “anti-democratic ideological signs” at various locations near his home in Awatuka. The signs were littered with messages that read: “Fuck you!”, “play stupid games and win stupid prizes!” and “guess the poison!”

There were no criminal indictments.

Kelly is being held on two $500,000 cash-only bonds.
