The father of the suspect who crashed his car into the store is asking him to surrender

BERLIN, Vt. (WCAX) – Police are continuing to search for a Williamstown man who allegedly crashed his car into a Berlin grocery store on Sunday.

Berlin police say 22-year-old Devin Gellock crashed his car at Market 32 on Route 302 in Berlin, causing a fire that caused extensive damage. It’s unclear if Hallock started the fire or if it happened after he left.

Gellock’s father, Bryant, on Monday pleaded with his son to surrender. He says he has mental health issues and doesn’t want his son to get hurt. “My message to my son would be to turn yourself in and get help. I think he’s having a mental breakdown, that’s what it is. He doesn’t know who to believe. He doesn’t know who’s out to get him and who’s out to help him,” he said.

Police released new surveillance images showing a gray Subaru with “Vermont Strong” license plates leaving the scene of the crash, and say the driver may have picked up Gellock.

Police say they were already looking for Gellock after he was caught making donuts outside the church on Friday. They say he injured an officer trying to get him out of the car and nearly hit another. “We don’t want to continue these interactions with him when he’s trying to escape. Either he hurts himself by doing it, or he hurts someone else on the road by doing it, or he hurts the responding officers. So we have to try to find a way to take him into custody,” Berlin Police Chief James Pontbriand said.

Police say Gellock is considered dangerous and should not be approached.
