Marion teen pleads guilty in 2023 Cedar Rapids shooting

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – A Marion teenager accused of 2023 Fatal shooting of a teenager in Cedar Rapids accepted a plea deal days before his case was set for trial.

Beynon Berry of Marion was arrested in April 2023 in connection with the death of 16-year-old Michael McCune.

The shooting happened around 11:42 a.m. on February 18, 2023, in the 1600 block of F Avenue NW.

Berry was charged with first-degree murder in the case. He was also arrested on outstanding warrants for conspiracy to commit a crime of violence, armed with intent and probation violation.

Under a plea agreement, Berry pleaded guilty to second-degree murder. Two more charges against him were dropped.

The hearing is scheduled for Tuesday. Berry accepted a plea deal on Friday.

The announcement of the verdict is scheduled for April 28.

Two other people, Dante Irwin and Tramontez Lockett, were also arrested in connection with the shooting. Both were charged with first degree murder.

Lockett’s trial is scheduled to begin in February.

In June 2023, Irwin entered into a plea agreement.
