Cyber ​​attack on Rutherford schools affects student information, Principal Sullivan confirms

Rutherford County School Principal Directed by James “Jimmy” Sullivan recently confirmed that “some student information” was compromised computer network hackers.

“As you are aware, Rutherford County Schools experienced a network and systems outage on Nov. 25, 2024,” Sullivan said in a Dec. 27 post on the district’s website before students return for Christmas and New Year’s break.

Sullivan said a county team is investigating the case with the help of third-party cybersecurity experts to determine the nature and scope of the incident.

“This was reported to us by cyber security experts some personal data of the employee was subject to unauthorized acquisition,” Sullivan said. “We don’t believe that this affects all of our employees, but we are conducting a thorough investigation. Additionally, some student information was subject to unauthorized acquisition.”

Sullivan said the investigation will include a thorough analysis of potentially compromised data.

“Once our review is complete, we will notify affected individuals in accordance with applicable law,” Sullivan said.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is assisting the county in its response to the cyber attack, TBI spokesman Josh DeWine confirmed.
