Two teenagers are dead and one adult is in critical condition after an early morning house fire in Ohio

An Ohio house fire early Wednesday morning killed two people and left a third in critical condition, officials said.

According to a news release from the Coventry Fire Department obtained by USA TODAY, authorities received a report around 3 a.m. of two juveniles inside a home in “smoke and flames” in Summit County. The caller was able to flee the residence before contacting law enforcement.

Responding deputies attempted to enter the residence, but it was “nearly impossible” to get inside, officials said.

Victims described as a male and female adolescent were removed from the home when fire crews arrived, according to local news reports. They were found in two different bedrooms and were reportedly asleep when the fire started.

The head of the school called the death of the victims a “devastating loss”

The teenagers, who were students at Coventry Local School District High School, were taken to a local hospital and died from their injuries. In a statement provided to USA TODAY, Superintendent George Fisk acknowledged their deaths, saying the community was “deeply saddened.”

“This devastating loss has touched our entire school community, and our hearts go out to the families and friends of these students at this difficult time,” the statement said. “Our primary goal is to support our students, staff and families as we all come to terms with this terrible loss. Counselors and mental health support services are currently working to support those students who are experiencing difficulties at this time.”

The third person is identified as a grandmother

The third victim was a grandmother, who is reportedly in serious condition. First, she called the police to the scene.

Friends told Fox 8 the teenagers live with their grandmother.

This incident is being investigated by the South Summit Fire Investigation Team with assistance from the Office of the State Fire Marshal.
