What happened to Sheri Spencer? Where is the figure of My wife, my abuser now

The 90-minute documentary, which originally aired on Channel 5 back in March, features footage of Richard Spencer’s abuse at the hands of his then-wife Cheri, as well as written accounts, audio recordings and photographs.

Richard said he decided to share his story to raise awareness for men who are victims of domestic violence.

Richard and Cheri Spencer appeared to be living an idyllic life in their well-to-do home in the East Yorkshire suburbs with their three daughters.

But behind the scenes, Cheri subjected Richard to a horrific campaign of terror that included a variety of physical and verbal abuse for 20 years.

Sheri reportedly spat and punched him, left him with bruises and scratches that he covered with make-up before going outside, and locked him in the house.

In one attack, she held a knife to his throat, and in another she hit him with a wine bottle, causing permanent damage to his ear and elbow.

She also controlled Richard financially, forcing him to take out vacation loans and refusing to pay his bills, and threatened to press false charges against him to the police if he disclosed the abuse.

One evening, Cheri sealed her fate by unexpectedly calling one of Richard’s friends, saying that he was drunk and that she feared she was in danger.

When the friend approached, Richard spoke candidly about Cheri’s abuse and showed the friend a video captured on one of the babysitter’s cameras.

The friend then went to the police for Richard.

Richard previously explained that they installed nanny cameras after the birth of their eldest daughter in 2015.

he said: “We had two—one in the playroom and one in the bedroom. They were there to reassure, to monitor, because the house is big.”

He continued: “It was kind of like a 28-day record, where if something new came in, the old footage would be deleted.”

In addition to these video clips, Richard also began to save audio recordings and photographs of his wife’s abuse as it escalated.

Sherry admitted his guilt to coercive and controlling behavior and three counts of assault causing actual bodily harm.

She was jailed for four years at Hull Crown Court in March 2023. The crimes she was found guilty of took place between 2016 and 2021.

During the hearing, Judge Kate Rayfield said: “This is the worst case of controlling and coercive behavior I have ever seen.”

Adele Jenkinson, from Humberside Police, said: “I would like to take this opportunity to recognize Mr Spencer’s strength, courage and patience during the criminal investigation and hope that this jail term will give him, his friends and family some closure so that they could move forward. and look to a happier future.

“Sheri Spencer is a cruel and abusive woman who abused her husband for years.

“The violations were committed for a long time and were systematic, several in one day.

“I hope this result will show all victims of domestic abuse and violence that, whoever you are, we will listen, support and take positive action to achieve justice.”

Meanwhile, speaking to the media after Spencer’s jailing, Richard said: “I have come to terms with the fact that I will never fully recover from her abuse and that it will have a permanent detrimental effect on my life and the lives of my family.

“Sheri’s abuse of me developed and escalated over time, repeatedly using acts of physical assault, threats, verbal abuse and humiliation to punish and control me.

“The abuse was hidden from the outside world, including friends and family. Sheri manipulated me into believing that I was a responsible and willing participant in the abuse.”

He continued: “She ruthlessly stated that I deserved to be punished and that it was a justifiable consequence of my having disappointed her in some way.”

Speaking on Good Morning Britain about the abuse he suffered at the hands of his wife in March 2023, Richard said: “I wanted to protect my face so I could still take the kids to school.”

He later praised the resilience his children showed throughout the ordeal.
