BBMP criticized for fact-checking ‘post-demolition’ photos, deletes tweet on illegal building demolition – Bangalore News

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has deleted a tweet showing the demolition of an illegal building in Mahadevapura after User X accused them of half-hearted work.

The since-deleted tweet, posted on October 28, carried a picture of the destruction with the caption, “Illegal construction, demolition work underway in Mahadevapura division.”

However, user Vishesh Arora responded to the post, suggesting the demolition was superficial by sharing an “after” photo showing only a few bricks removed from the building’s first-floor balcony.

Within 24 hours of Arora’s announcement, construction had reportedly resumed at the site, raising serious concerns about the BBMP’s commitment to enforcing laws against illegal construction in Bangalore.

Other users also reacted to the threat, with most of them asking whether the civic body was determined to take responsibility for the illegal developments.

Neither the BBMP Commissioner nor the Zonal Commissioner of Mahadevapura were available for comment on the incident.

A week ago, on October 23, an illegal building collapsed in northern Bengaluru, killing nine people. The BBMP has been largely criticized for inefficiency, especially in light of the recent heavy rains that have led to extensive flooding in the city, inundating technology parks and residential areas.

Criticism of BBMP is not new. Tejaswi Surya, a BJP member of parliament from Bangalore South, called the agency “the most corrupt organisation”, claiming that no matter which political party is in power, BBMP officials do not change their behaviour.
