Porter's license revoked for charging NRI Rs 10,000 for wheelchair service at Hazrat Nizamuddin station

On December 28, a horrific incident took place at Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station in Delhi. The carrier was found to have overcharged a Non-Resident Indian (NRI) passenger by demanding Rs 10,000 for wheelchair assistance and baggage handling. This was a serious violation, as it is part of the standard services at the stations. That’s when Payel, a native of Gujarat who lives in London, filed a formal complaint over the unreasonable billing.
The incident also prompted passengers to be vigilant about their rights and the services they can avail at train stations. The railway emphasized that such incidents of misconduct could have been avoided if passengers were well informed and proactive enough to report such issues when they arise.

A porter overcharged an NRI for wheelchair assistance at Hazrat Nizamuddin station

Payel, a native of Gujarat who currently resides in London, left for Delhi with her family on December 21. Her parents, Ritesh and Sandhya, had intended to go to Agra on December 28. Carrier at Hazrat Nizamuddin Station approached them and demanded as much as 10,000 rupees to carry her elderly father’s wheelchair up the stairs and push their luggage to the platform.
She eventually managed to contact a local acquaintance, Anil Sharma, secretary of the Prepaid Auto Taxi Drivers Union, who explained to Payel that any service at the train station meant free wheelchair assistance. Porters are only allowed to charge for a few basic things and, quite often, within what can be expected of porters. Panicking, the couple immediately took action.

NRI family informs GRP about overcharging for wheelchair assistance

As soon as Payel came to know about it, she informed the man to contact the GRP of Agra Cantt station and file a complaint about the incident. The GRP has initiated an investigation and has been working with officials of Hazrat Nizamuddin to investigate the case. They went through CCTV footage at the railway station to identify the porter involved in the scam.
As a result, the porter had to return Rs 9,000 of the amount as the family had already been paid in full. Again, this story led to this porter facing strict action from the railway authorities, who canceled his railway license permanently.

Delhi DRM apologizes for overcharging incident at Hazrat Nizamuddin station

After the incident, the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) of Delhi issued a public apology for the issue. The DRM said that the actions of the porter were completely inappropriate and pointed out that such incidents undermine the confidence of passengers in the railway system. In a statement, the DRM reiterated that Indian Railways has a zero tolerance policy towards any malpractices and exploitation of passengers.
This included public awareness work to ensure that all passenger transport was carried out fairly and transparently, and that strict measures would be taken to avoid this happening again.

The railway reaffirms its commitment to safe travel

In addition to the apology, the statement reaffirmed the railroad’s commitment to providing safe, reliable and comfortable travel for all passengers. The DRM again stressed vigilance on the part of both the railway staff and the passengers to ensure that such incidents do not recur in future. The railway appealed to all passengers to report their complaints immediately to the helpline number 139 for prompt resolution of any complaint.
