  • Google has announced several performance-related additions to its Chrome browser.
  • The browser now has a performance detection tool to quickly deactivate tabs that use excessive resources.
  • Chrome now also offers three different memory saving modes.

Google Chrome has long had a reputation for poor performance, and the search giant has struggled to address these issues in recent years. Now Google has announced some more additions in this regard.

Company announced several tools to help improve Chrome’s resource management and performance, starting with the so-called Performance Discovery Tool. This pop-up menu notifies you when background tabs are taking up too much resources. The menu also has a button to quickly deactivate non-disruptive tabs so you can get resources for the current tab. Fortunately, you can turn this tool off if you don’t like it.

Google launched the Memory Saver feature in Chrome back in 2022 to free up RAM from background tabs. This feature now has three modes: Moderate, Balanced, and Maximum. Setting a moderate memory saving mode will disable tabs and free up memory according to current system needs. At the same time, maximum mode deactivates tabs and frees memory much faster. These modes can be found by visiting Settings > Performance > Memory Saver. It’s also worth noting that the balanced setting is the default mode.

Finally, Google noted that Chrome now has more performance customization options in the settings menu. One welcome addition is the ability to specify websites that should always remain active. This should be very handy if you have important tabs running in the background that are often deactivated.
