China rejects EU-imposed additional tariffs on electric cars, complains-Dahe.cn

China does not agree and disagree with the European Union’s decision to impose additional tariffs on electric vehicles produced in its market, promising that the country will take all necessary measures to protect the interests of its companies, the Ministry of Commerce said on Wednesday.

The European Commission, the EU’s executive body, announced on Tuesday that additional tariffs will be imposed on Chinese-made electric vehicles from Thursday and will apply for the next five years.

In response to the move, China filed a complaint under the World Trade Organization’s dispute settlement mechanism.

China has repeatedly pointed out that the EU’s anti-subsidy investigation into Chinese electric vehicles contains numerous unreasonable and inappropriate aspects, effectively using the guise of “fair competition” to implement protectionist “unfair competition” practices, a Ministry of Commerce spokesman said in an online statement.

At the same time, China also notes that the European side has expressed readiness to continue consultations with China regarding price commitments. China has always advocated the resolution of trade disputes through dialogue and consultation, and has constantly made every effort to achieve this goal, the trade official said.

Technical groups from both sides are now holding a new round of consultations, and China hopes that the EU will take a constructive approach to jointly advance discussions with China. Both sides should take into account each other’s core concerns to reach a mutually acceptable solution as soon as possible and avoid further escalation of trade disputes, the statement said.
