A man is in custody in connection with a killing Tuesday in south Abilene

Police are investigating a homicide that happened early Tuesday morning in south Abilene.

Police arrested and charged Jalen Clint Schafer, 25, of Abilene with the murder of David Anthony Vasquez, 47, of Abilene.

Shafer was being held without bond in the Taylor County Jail as of early Tuesday, according to online jail records.

According to a media report, around 12:30 a.m. Tuesday, police responded to a call about a possibly injured person in the 5200 block of U.S. Highway 277 and Kleck Street.

The law enforcement officers reported that an ineligible man was lying on the road in the area of ​​the culvert. When EMS arrived, they found Vasquez with a gunshot wound that later resulted in his death.

The next of kin have been informed, the investigation is ongoing.
