Radio and television stations received hundreds of calls for help from citizens who were in flooded areas or looking for their loved ones, as emergency services could not reach all affected areas.

“If (emergency services) didn’t come, it’s not because of a lack of means or inclination, it’s because of an access problem,” Mason said, adding that it was “absolutely impossible” to get to certain areas.

Footage shows firefighters rescuing trapped drivers amid heavy rain in the Valencian city of Alzira and streets flooded with stuck cars.

Scientists say that due to climate change, extreme weather events are becoming more frequent. Meteorologists believe that the warming of the Mediterranean Sea, which increases the evaporation of water, plays a key role in increasing the torrential rains.

Schools and other basic services have been suspended in the most affected areas.

Local emergency services called for help from the UME, a military unit specializing in rescue operations, in the Utjell-Rekena district, where the storm caused significant crop damage, according to the farmers’ association ASAJA.
