Haason Reddick’s long tenure with the New York Jets may not have accomplished all that in the short term.

Talking about football Mike Florio shared the details of Reddick’s revised one-year contract with New York.

His base salary of $8.7 million reflects the seven weeks he missed in the regular season. The two-time Pro Bowler can earn another $791,628 if he is on the field for at least 40 percent of New York’s defensive snaps the rest of the way.

He has more individual and team performance incentives that have been added and tied to his sack total and whether the Jets reach the Super Bowl.

After collecting eight sacks, Reddick will receive $500,000, and then another $500,000 each for the ninth and 10th sacks. Getting to 12 sacks would mean pocketing another $550,000, per Florio.

If New York reaches the Super Bowl, the 30-year-old will earn $2 million while on the active roster.

The new incentives amount to just over $4.8 million.

Had Reddick simply played out the season under his original deal, he would have had a $14.5 million salary. He’s getting a lot less guaranteed money now, and the odds of him getting even some of his incentives aren’t very good.

The Jets are 2-6 and in last place in the AFC East. Fans in general have already written them off as Super Bowl contenders.

Reddick’s Week 8 debut wasn’t too encouraging either. He failed to register a tackle on his 26 defensive snaps in a 25-22 loss to the New England Patriots, leaving him nine games away from accumulating the necessary stats or impressing enough to become a Pro Bowler or All-Pro. These existing incentives are carried forward and cost $500,000 apiece, per Florio.

Something is better than nothing when it comes to Reddick’s current salary. In addition to the lost income, the fines increased significantly while he served time.

Also, holding out for a full season wasn’t realistic, as it risked the 2024 campaign not counting toward Reddick’s tenure. He would still be on the Jets’ books through 2025 and not become a free agent.

But a closer look at the finances shows how the veteran leader’s bold stance has backfired.
