The Kentucky River Honor Band performs at the Hal Rogers Forum

HAZARD, Ky. (WYMT) – Members of the Kentucky River Honors Band performed at the Hal Rogers Forum in Hazard on October 29th.

The group included students from Breathitt, Harlan, Knott, Leslie, Letcher, Owsley and Perry counties.

The group started in 2023 with the goal of integrating children into the community after the 2022 flood.

Band director Bobby Shaws said it’s important for kids to have events like this.

“We are here for the children. That’s what we’re here for. You don’t go to school to be a teacher if you’re not here for the kids,” he said. “We are ready to come here and spend the whole day with them. It’s a lot of fun. They are having a good time. We’re having a good time.”

The event was sponsored by the Appalachian Arts Alliance.

Shaws said the group plans to hold more events like this in the future.
