Manchester United have agreed to pay the release clause in Ruben Amorim’s Sporting contract, meaning his move to Old Trafford is all but confirmed.

The Red Devils sacked Erik ten Heg on Monday and quickly opened talks with the highly-rated 39-year-old, who has previously been linked with Premier League clubs.

Liverpool and Chelsea are under consideration Amorim in their previous managerial hunts, while the manager admitted he held talks with West Ham in April before turning down a move to the London Stadium.

Amorim will arrive at Manchester United with a glittering reputation as one of the best young managers in the world, having won five trophies during his time at Sporting, including their first league title in 19 years.

But the task before him is undoubtedly difficult. He is expected to quickly transform United’s form and force them into European football this season.
