The USPS is closing and removing trash cans at some Colorado Springs post offices

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — When you walk into any post office in Colorado Springs, you can tell something has changed.

“I go to the post office a lot and I don’t pay much attention to the trash cans,” resident Marilyn Muth said.

Those who use the post office at East Pikes Peak Avenue and South Nevada Avenue have noticed that there are no trash cans inside at all. In fact, the nearest public one is on the corner of the street.

“I noticed there were no trash cans when I went to pick up my mail,” resident Alfreda Jones said. “Either we trust the people who look after our ballots, or we don’t.”

A USPS spokesperson shared this statement:

“This is a temporary preventative measure at several local post offices to prevent the theft of election materials that have been discarded by customers.”

Both the El Paso County Clerk and the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) have confirmed that there have been no documented cases of potential ballot tampering or mail-in ballot tampering.

But for people to get their mail, there has to be a reason to move.

“With how contentious things have become between the parties, you see a lot of unreasonable behavior, so maybe this is just another one,” resident Kelly Sill said.
