Mysterious deposit causes surprise – and a ,000 bank account: Pepper Pike Police Blotter

PEPPER PIKE, Ohio

Suspect: Muirfield Drive

A resident reported a possible scam on Dec. 19 after purchasing a new computer and contacting what he believed to be Microsoft customer service to set up an account.

He gave them his bank information after being told he would receive a $200 refund from Microsoft. But he got an extra $20,000 in his bank account.

His bank confirmed the transaction and froze his account, creating a new one for him to make sure the depositor didn’t withdraw anything extra.

Fraud: Shaker Blvd

A resident reported unauthorized debit card use totaling more than $3,000 on Dec. 16, with most, if not all, of the fraudulent charges occurring out of state. The police were monitoring the transactions, and charges may have been filed.

Fraud: Thornapple Lane

A resident reported an unauthorized credit card charge on or about December 16. The credit card company has already removed the charge and police said the victim has not received the money.

Civil case: Ainsworth Drive

The resident called police on Dec. 16 after receiving threatening text messages from the contractor regarding a $700 civil dispute. After determining that the text messages could at least be considered offensive, the officer mediated the situation, advising both parties the matter was best left to a judge in small claims court.

Civil Case: Butternut Lane

The resident reported disagreements with the contractor regarding the handyman’s work on December 14 and appealed to the civil court.

Handicapped Vehicle, Mutual Aid: I-271, Cedar Road

Pepper Pike police encountered a vehicle stuck in a grassy area between the local and express lanes of the freeway around 2:30 a.m. Dec. 14 just north of the Cedar Road interchange.

They contacted the police from the legal jurisdiction in Lyndhurst and waited until the driver, a 41-year-old resident of Cleveland Heights, turned over the loaded revolver he had on him at the time.

This led to several charges have been filed through Lyndhurst, related to driving while impaired and illegal transportation of a weapon.
