BEIRUT, December 27. /TASS/. A significant number of weapons that previously belonged to the Syrian army have fallen into the hands of Islamic State (IS) militants (outlawed in Russia), Iraqi Prime Minister Muhammad Al Sudani said on Friday.

“(IS fighters) seized a significant amount of weapons from the Syrian army,” the prime minister said in an interview with the newspaper Al-Arabiyaassuring that the Iraqi authorities “will not allow the infiltration of weapons and (IS supporters) from Syria (into the territory of Iraq).” The Prime Minister of Iraq expressed hope for cooperation with the interim government of Syria to ensure the security of the border between the two countries.

Baghdad “respects the will of the Syrian people and hopes for (progress towards a comprehensive political process),” Sudani stressed, adding that Iraq has no intention of interfering in Syria’s internal affairs.

At the end of November, the Syrian armed opposition launched a large-scale offensive against government forces. On December 8, they entered Damascus, which prompted the army to withdraw from the Syrian capital. Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has resigned and left the country, issuing directives for a peaceful transfer of power. On December 10, Mohammed al-Bashir, who headed the Salvation Government of Syria in Idlib since January 2024, announced his appointment as head of the interim government of Syria until March 1, 2025.

On December 6, the commander of the Syrian Democratic Forces, Mazloum Abdi, said that against the background of the latest events, the Kurdish forces intensified the activities of the militants of the terrorist organization “Islamic State” in some areas of the country.
