A driver in Cape Town narrowly escaped with his life on Christmas Eve after being ambushed during a robbery with an electronic call, reports Cape {town}, &c.

Multiple reports suggest the incident took place on Mitchell’s Plain.

In the statement of the DAP, it is reported that the incident happened on the street Hadji Ebrahiem Crescent, Rylands in Athlone.

Dashcam footage at around 5pm shows the terrifying moment the e-call driver arrives at the drop-off point.

As the driver parks, the male suspect enters, grabs the handbrake with his left hand and brandishes a hunting knife.

A few minutes later, a second suspect appears with a knife, followed by two more on the driver’s side and behind.

The suspects demand valuables, threaten the driver, and then steal his phone, speedpoint and cash.

In a strange twist, one robber shakes the driver’s hand before fleeing with the others.

The suspects are identified on the video recorder, but they remain at large.

in AugustJ. P. Smith, the Mayco City Council member for safety and security, said criminals are exploiting vulnerabilities in today’s technology, using apps and social media tools designed to make life better for illegal activities.

“Because this technology is heavily dependent on smartphones, criminals often target users of these platforms. Those working in electronic communication platforms and delivery services often aim for the same thing.”

Smith says Uber customers need to keep their drivers safe by making sure they don’t wait too long outside.

“Use the app features to see the progress of their journey and meet them at the entrance or, where safe, near the road.

“Avoid them waiting where they can become victims.”

“If you’re using an e-call service, make sure you have a complete personal profile along with an extended trip history.”

“Avoid paying cash for rides – increasingly, drivers on these platforms will avoid these ‘suspicious’ rides,” adds Smith.
