LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – A man accused of carjacking and causing a crash that killed a high school student on March 1, 2021 has changed his plea.

Michael DeWitt pleaded guilty Monday to driving a stolen car the wrong way on Dixie Highway and crashing into the car head-on, killing the driver, 17-year-old Madeline Troutt.

DeWitt was out on $5,000 Bail Project bail at the time of the crash. As part of a section of the Kentucky Security Act passed in March 2024, Madeline’s Law now prohibits charities from making a bond of $5,000 or more.
