Featuring special guest DJ Smith, Senior Technical Surveillance Agent, Virginia State Police

With over 30 years of covert technical and tactical surveillance, DJ Smith brings invaluable experience to the issues surrounding the use of counter-drone technology as well as the management of rogue drones. His extensive experience includes work in counter-surveillance tactics, cellular tracking and geolocation, making him a key figure in determining how law enforcement can effectively respond to unauthorized drone activity. An experienced Part 107 pilot, Smith has been involved in small unmanned aerial vehicle (sUAS) and counter-UAS operations for more than 13 years, equipping him to deal with the growing risks associated with drones.

Smith’s article will cover the current options available to law enforcement agencies when rogue drones are reported, providing an in-depth look at both the technology and strategies that can help law enforcement officers address these issues. In his work as the Virginia State Police Unmanned Aircraft and Unmanned Aircraft Systems Program Coordinator, Smith participated in policy and program development, serving on the FAA Unmanned Aircraft Rulemaking Committee and the DHS Blue UAS Evaluation Program. His perspectives on public safety drone regulations and new anti-drone technologies shed light on both the potential and limitations for local law enforcement agencies dealing with unauthorized drone incidents.
