A New Jersey police sergeant has been charged in connection with a deadly crash in Riverdale

An East Hanover police sergeant has been charged with vehicular homicide and vehicular assault in a crash that left one person dead in Riverdale earlier this month, Morris County officials said Tuesday.

Keith M. Guenther, 42, of Wanaka, was charged with second-degree vehicular homicide and third-degree vehicular assault in the crash that left one person dead on the night of Oct. 15.

On Tuesday, October 15th at 10:58 p.m., Riverdale Police responded to the area of ​​Highway 23 North for a report of a two-vehicle accident involving a pickup truck and a sedan.

Investigators said the truck Guenther was driving was traveling in the opposite lane of traffic, traveling southbound in the northbound lanes, when it struck the car.

The passenger of the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene and was identified as 55-year-old Hameed Shabuddin of Paterson, officials said. The driver of the vehicle suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to St. Joseph’s University Medical Center, according to authorities.

Officials did not identify the driver of the vehicle Tuesday.

Authorities said Guenther showed signs of intoxication at the scene of the crash, and after an investigation, he was charged in Shabuddin’s death and issued a summons for driving under the influence.

The authorities did not provide any other details of the investigation on Tuesday.

Gunter has been released from custody and is under pretrial supervision, authorities said. He was ordered to surrender his driver’s license and passport and to refrain from excessive alcohol consumption, officials said.

An attorney for Gunter did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Officials with the East Hanover Police Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment Tuesday.
