Hanoi’s Department of Construction is exploring 899 sidewalks in the city to lease from the first quarter of 2025.

The Department of Construction collects the opinions of many departments regarding the management and use of sidewalks in the city. On December 16, Hanoi already allowed vehicles to be parked on the roadway of 234 streets.

At the suggestion of local authorities, 899 sidewalks were surveyed in order to be considered leased. More than 90% of the surveyed streets are used for food and beverage trade.

The Department outlines several criteria for commercial use of a sidewalk, including a minimum width requirement of 3m and sufficient parking spaces.

To reach a consensus, the district authorities will need to ask the opinion of the families who live on the streets allowed for business. Streets can be approved for commercial use for up to a year. Fees for using parts of the sidewalks for vehicle parking or commercial purposes will be between VND 20,000 and VND 40,000 (USD 0.79-1.57) per m2 per month.

The Hoan Kiem district of Hanoi is currently the only district that allows sidewalks to be rented for commercial purposes. The rent is VND 45,000 per m2 per month.
