Kentucky man accused of killing neighbor’s cat because it was ‘bothering’

GEORGETOWN, Ky. (WKYT) – A Georgetown man is accused of killing his neighbor’s cat.

It happened on September 22 in Green Lane.

According to the complaint, the cat’s owners returned home that evening to find their cat lying in the grass with what appeared to be a gunshot wound. The cat was taken to the vet, but had to be put to sleep.

Deputies visited Christopher Jones, 52, the next day to talk to him about what happened.

The criminal complaint says Jones admitted to shooting the cat with a shotgun after saying the cat was on his property causing a nuisance by climbing on his vehicles and leaving paw prints.

The complaint says Jones told deputies he did not try to contact the cat’s owner to let them know of the problems and believed he did not need to. Jones told deputies he wasn’t sure who owned the cat and hadn’t contacted anyone after he shot the cat.

Jones is accused of torturing a dog or cat. Following the passage of Ethan’s Law in 2024, the charge became a felony. The law makes torturing a dog or cat a Class D felony in every case.
