A second child has died in a car crash in Sumter County

SUMTER COUNTY, S.C. (WIS) – A 12-year-old boy has died after being hit by a car at the same location where A 15-year-old boy was also killed in Sumter Countyon Sunday morning, according to county Coroner Robbie Baker.

The 12-year-old victim has been identified as Besir Wells.

The crash happened around 6 a.m. on Britton Road near Highway 521.

Wells is the second person to die after the accident.

The first victim, 15-year-old Marvin Butler, was also struck and killed at the same location near Highway 521, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol (SCHP). SCHP said Butler was walking at the time of the crash.

SCHP said the driver of a 2014 Dodge pickup truck was traveling west on Britton Road when they hit Butler.

Troopers told WIS News 10 no charges have yet been filed and the case remains under investigation.

According to the Sumter School District, Butler was a student at Crestwood High School.

The district shared the following statement with WIS:

“The Sumter School District is saddened by the loss of a Crestwood Middle School student. Our thoughts, prayers and deepest sympathies are with his family at this very difficult time. Such a tragedy has a significant impact on both our students and staff. The Summer School District is very sensitive to the emotional needs of our school family, and our crisis support team will be ready to assist anyone at Crestwood Middle School who may need help coping with this tragic loss.”

An autopsy on Wells’ body is scheduled for Friday at the University of Medicine in Charleston. An autopsy on Butler’s body is scheduled for next week.
