A drive-by shooting has claimed the life of a man in central Florida

A man has been arrested in connection with a drive-by shooting that killed a man in central Florida last weekend.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) said dispatch received a 911 call at 2:17 p.m. on Oct. 27 reporting a man had been shot at US Highway 301 and Bloomingdale Avenue in Riverview. Deputies found a man with a gunshot wound to the upper body at the scene. Unfortunately, the victim died from his injuries in a local hospital.

“Sunday turned into a nightmare that cost lives, leaving a family devastated by this senseless violence,” said Sheriff Chad Chronister. “This reckless act shows complete disregard for human life. Violence is never the answer and this tragedy could have been completely avoided.”

Eyewitnesses at the scene said that the shooter had already fled the scene. After an investigation, Kentavious Gholston was identified as the shooter. In addition, detectives said that Gholston tampered with physical evidence related to the case.

HCSO said a 26-year-old man was arrested and booked into the county jail for:

  • 2nd degree murder with a firearm
  • Aggravated assault with a firearm
  • Falsification of physical evidence
  • VOP – Domestic violence by strangulation

“There is never an excuse for an argument to turn violent,” said Sheriff Chronister. “Our detectives are fully committed to this investigation and we will ensure that justice is done for the victim.”

The sheriff’s office said the investigation is still ongoing.
