Starting Friday, people can apply for help with paying for electricity in the winter

ROCHESTER, NEW YORK. RG&E and NYSEG customers who need help paying their electric bills this winter can apply for help starting Friday.

People can apply through the Home Energy Assistance Program, a federal grant program. Privileges are available until March 17, 2025 or while supplies last. Anyone enrolled in HEAP will also receive a monthly credit to their account through the Business Energy Assistance Program. You can find out how to apply on the state’s website here.

If you receive any of the following assistance programs, you can complete an application and provide proof of participation to enroll:

  • Additional security income
  • Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)
  • Medicaid
  • Federal state housing assistance
  • Pension for veterans and assistance in case of loss of breadwinner
  • Bureau of General Assistance in Indian Affairs
  • Tribal temporary assistance for needy families
  • Food distribution program on Indian reservations
  • Tribal Lands main launch
  • Lifeline telephone service program
  • The HEAP grant applies to a fuel supplier other than NYSEG or RG&E
