Police shooting in St. Paul: Man with non-life-threatening injuries

An armed man shot past St. Paul Police in the Hamline-Midway area Monday night was rushed to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, authorities said.

What we know

The St. Paul Police Department said shortly before 7:45 p.m., officers were dispatched to a report of a shooting near the 400 block of Pierce Street. People also called 911 to report the shooting in the area of Snelling and University avenues.

When officers arrived at the scene, police found a man who they said was armed with a handgun, and he pointed the weapon at the man’s head. The man did not comply when asked to put down his weapon and continued down Snelling Avenue before going around the intersection at University Avenue West, police said.

Police continued to negotiate with the man, trying to get him to put down his guns, and attempted to fire “less lethal rounds” but were unsuccessful, authorities said. When the man pointed the weapon at the police, the police fired and hit the man.

Officers say the man was taken to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries and remains in critical condition. As a result of the incident, none of the officers were injured.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is currently investigating the use of force and finished processing the scene Tuesday morning.

Because of the shooting and the subsequent investigation, the traffic of buses and trams along University Avenue was interrupted during the night. The intersection of University and Snelling avenues reopened at 6 a.m. Tuesday, according to the BCA.

What we don’t know

Authorities have not said if any signs of gunfire were found near where police initially responded.
