Detectives are trying to solve the problem of a rise in the number of murders amid claims that the police are underfunded.

Two murders are reported every day, putting the police under strain.

While some of them have been revealed, the bulk remains undiscovered for a long time.

Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja said there had been a slight increase in homicides in recent months.

According to him, a comparative analysis of homicides registered from August to October for the years 2022-24 shows a slight increase.

There have been 339 homicides so far in 2024, compared to 336 in 2023 and 341 in 2022.

Director of the Criminal Investigation Department, Mohamed Amin, said they could stop the killings if they had advance information about the plans.

“It is something that someone plans to do, or may happen under certain circumstances, that no one can prevent. If we don’t have advance information, it will be difficult to stop it,” he added.

Amin said they are determined to look into the cases that have been reported to them so far.

A full homicide unit is staffed and equipped to help solve incidents.

In 2022, there were 3,056 murders, in 2021 – 3,281, in 2020 – 3,111, in 2019 – 2,971, in 2018 – 2,856.

Homicide seems to be overwhelmed by the growing number of cases.

The latest tragedy involves Wells Fargo human resources manager Willis Ayeko, whose body was found dumped in a creek on the border of Siaya and Kakamega counties in Yala on October 21.

Ayeko’s eyes were gouged out, ears were cut off.

His family, who saw the body minutes after it was discovered, said the killers had also tortured him.

Police said the body was decomposed when it was discovered by a student.

He had bruises on his face and stomach, which indicated that he had been dragged over a rough surface.

According to Nyanza Regional Criminal Investigation Officer Lenny Kisaka, 52-year-old Ayeko, who also had a gun stolen from him, had a firearms licence.

The motive for the murder has not yet been established, and no suspect has been arrested.
