MILLBURY. A small brush fire, believed to have started in the camp, killed one woman on Saturday evening.

On Monday, the Worcester County Prosecutor’s Office identified the victim as 49-year-old Marianne Audette.

This is stated in the message of the Department of Fire Protection:

At approximately 8:20 p.m. Saturday, Massachusetts State Troopers responded to a brush fire in the Blackstone River area off Highway 146 in Millbury.

Odette was located in the camp. The trooper notified the Millbury Fire Department and the police, and the fire was completely extinguished.

Odette was pronounced dead at the scene. The chief medical examiner determines the cause and manner of death.

At the time of the fire, the state was under a red flag warning that any open fire could spread quickly and be difficult to extinguish due to dry and windy weather.

The campsite is just south of the Worcester/Millbury border. The bike path, now open to the public, is located south of the Worcester Walmart on Tobias Boland Way.

On Monday, the place of the fire was surrounded by a yellow tape.

Inside the yellow tape were shopping carts filled with personal items, including clothing.

Garbage bags were also seen in the area cordoned off with yellow tape.

Beyond the yellow tape, drug paraphernalia could be seen on the table.

Samantha Olney of HALO Greater Worcester, a homeless advocacy group founded by homeless people to support homeless substance users and advocate for them in the community, said she knew Odette and was devastated.

Olney said in an email that she could not “emphasize enough” that homeless people should not camp alone.

In addition, Olney called for a sanctioned encampment in the city to provide some stability for the homeless. Olney has previously filed a petition the city council allowed such a camp, but the idea was rejected.

Bushfires have been a problem across the state for the past week due to the drought.

Fire crews from many Central Massachusetts communities on Wednesday fought intense brush fire covering five acres in a wooded area in Holden near the Paxton town limits. Sutton Fire Service also tackled a brush fire which started near a house in a wooded area off Whitins Road.
