The video captured the suspect firing in an exchange with Chicago police

A 22-year-old man has been charged after one shooting led to another exchange of fire with Chicago police in West Rogers Park on Saturday morning.

Sidi Mohamed Abdallahi is charged with more than a dozen felonies, including six counts of attempted first-degree murder, seven counts of shooting a police officer or firefighter and one count of aggravated battery with a firearm.

Abdallahi walked up to a 39-year-old man and shot him without saying a word in the 2600 block of West Farwell Avenue around 9:30 a.m., according to Chicago police. When officers and medics arrived at the scene, Abdallahi allegedly fired at them. several times from different places. Only an ambulance came under fire. The police returned fire and wounded Abdallahi.

None of the officers and firefighters were injured. Abdallahi was arrested about 30 minutes after the first shooting in the 6800 block of North Washtenaw Avenue. He was taken to the district hospital in serious condition.

Neighbors said that the victim was going to his synagogue before the shooting. He was shot in the shoulder and released from the hospital, police said.

So far, Chicago police have said they will not file hate crime charges until evidence proves otherwise.

“We have to find out the motive of the crime,” said the Chicago police chief. Larry Snelling said.

However, 50th Ward Alderman Debra Silverstein is calling for hate crime charges.

“Our community would like to see this as a hate crime. He was going to the synagogue. We are very concerned,” she said.

Neighbors say the suspect yelled a Muslim phrase on surveillance footage during the shootout. Chief of Detectives Antoinette Ursetti said that “this statement, which was made during the conversation with the police officers, does not at this time constitute any evidence to support any motive for his actions against our police officers and also our victim.”

The police reported that a weapon was found at the scene. According to CPD, the officers involved in the shooting have been placed on regular administrative duties for at least 30 days as part of department protocol.

Supp. Snelling said they have not yet interviewed the suspect as he remains in the hospital. A hearing on Abdallahi’s detention is scheduled for Tuesday.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) is investigating and anyone with more information is asked to call COPA at 312-746-3609.
