Crews are battling a large grass fire south of Center Valley

WICHITA, KS (KWCH) – Renewal: Fifteen units representing five agencies, including the Wichita Fire Department and Sedgwick County Fire District One, were able to protect homes from a large grass fire near North 53rd Street and Meridian.

Shortly before 6 p.m., Sedgwick County Fire Marshal Brad Crisp said crews were making progress in containing the fire, mostly keeping it under control. Initially, there were fears that the fire could spread to the houses, but residents did not have to evacuate.

Between 50 and 70 acres have burned, Crisp said. As of Monday evening, Crisp said it was not known what caused the fire, but it is believed to have started accidentally.

Renewal: The Sedgwick County Emergency Management Agency said evacuations have been lifted in the area of ​​53rd and High streets, near Meridian, north of Wichita.

Emergency management said crews believed they might have to evacuate homes in the area due to the grass fire, but have so far managed to keep the buildings safe without an evacuation process.
