UTHSC is holding a candlelight vigil for Ellie Young

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Students at the University of Tennessee Health Center celebrated life Ellie Youngmedical student, deputies say, was shot and killed by her ex-boyfriend in a Shelby Farms park.

In the dark, dozens of white coats glowed during a UTHSC-hosted vigil Sunday for 22-year-old Ellie Young.

“We met at orientation and she was so positive the whole time,” said Macy Daniel, a friend of Young’s.

Macy Daniel and her classmates recalled the time when Young was a student at the UT Health Science Center.

“You didn’t have to know Ellie long to know you already loved her,” Daniel said. “I mean, she was the most genuine and incredible person I’ve ever met. We became instant friends, but I don’t think I can claim that alone. I think Ellie could make friends with anyone and she really was such a sweet soul.’

Speaking to WREG, Daniel provided the following photo from Young’s funeral:

“Her family asked us to wear white coats in Ellie’s honor because she’s really excited to be a doctor and get her white coat,” Daniel said. “I mean, we just got our white coats a couple of months ago, and even though she only got to wear them for a couple of months, I know they were some of the best months of her life.”

Now her accused murderer and ex-boyfriend Jackson Hopperis facing charges in multiple counties for allegedly shooting Young at Shelby Farms Park.

Law enforcement officials said Hopper led them on a chase through several counties before he was arrested in Dyer County.

“She needs that justice,” Daniel said. “Her family can’t rest until we make sure this never happens to anyone else.”

Hopper was in court Monday and is expected back Nov. 12. He is currently being held without bail.
