Man accused of firing gun at deputies pleads not guilty in Wood County

WISCONSIN RAPIDS, Wis. (WSAW) – A 40-year-old Wisconsin Rapids man accused of shooting officers during a traffic stop in Wisconsin Rapids has pleaded not guilty.

Clinton Mayotte is charged with eight counts, including the first count of attempted first-degree murder.

Investigators said that in the early morning hours of August 20, police were trying to find him after he left the scene of a domestic incident. He was later spotted by deputies in neighboring Portage County. According to investigators, he did not stop when police tried to pull him over. He is accused of firing weapons and hitting vehicles. None of the officers were injured.

According to the original press release, his vehicle was disabled near 8th Street and East Grand Avenue in Wisconsin Rapids. According to the investigation, he continued to shoot at the police and fled the scene. A short time later, he was found on a roof with the help of a drone in the area of ​​9th and Vynohradnaya Streets. According to the investigation, he shot at the officers while on the roof. The officers returned fire, detained him and transported him to the hospital.

Numerous law enforcement agencies assisted in the incident. Including the Portage and Wood County Sheriff’s Offices, Grand Rapids, Nekosa, Stevens Point and Marshfield Police Departments.

The Criminal Investigation Department is conducting the investigation.

He remains in custody on $2.11 million bail. He faces additional charges in Portage County.

A court appearance is set for Jan. 28 in Wood County.
