How to keep your furry friends safe this Halloween

How to keep your furry friends safe this Halloween

SOUTHERN COLORADO — With costumes, masks, lights and people coming to your door, Halloween can be spooky for pets.

The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) says you can take steps to reduce the risk of your furry friends being injured, poisoned or killed by:

  • don’t feed pets treats on Halloween
  • make sure pets have collars
  • keep lit candles and flashlights away from pets
  • keep glow sticks, jewelry, and batteries away from pets

If you plan to have your pet in costume, the AVMA advises making sure it does the following:

  • fits well and is comfortable
  • does not contain pieces that are easy to chew
  • does not block your pet’s vision, hearing or breathing

The AVMA says take the time before Halloween to make sure your pet’s costume is ready. They also say if your pet has a tendency to bite, put him in a room away from the front door during treat times.
