An Omaha high school special education teacher is killed in a shooting at a Sarpy County home

CHALCO, Neb. (WOWT) – A Westside High School teacher and her husband are dead after a domestic violence incident turned into a shootout at a home on the southwest edge of metro Omaha.

Sarpy County Sheriff Jeff Davis said Monday that deputies found 45-year-old Rebecca Geiger dead in her Chalco Hills home after a shooting near South 143rd Street and Meadows Parkway around 3 a.m.

Authorities said Geiger’s 19-year-old daughter called 911 and told operators that her father, Rory Geiger, 44, had shot her mother and that he had pointed a gun at her.

Rory Geiger then turned his attention to the deputies, though Davis said it was the person in the house who fired the first shot.

“The subject fired from inside the house – through a glass window. One of our officers returned fire,” the sheriff said.

Deputies then entered the home and found Rory Geiger dead. Rescue measures were carried out on the victim, but he was declared dead, it was reported at the press conference.

When the shooting started, the couple’s two daughters were in the house. Officials said the girls could have been in serious trouble.

6 News was first on the scene Monday morning. Authorities said they were at the home about a month ago because of the incident and were told not to return.

“There was an alert on the house because of the response they got at the time,” Davis said. “It was at home and we were monitoring mental health issues. The next day the man said to him, “Be careful; you must not come back here.’

Five deputies involved in the shooting were sent on administrative leave, the authorities said. None of them were injured.

Investigators are checking body cameras worn by deputies, as well as cameras inside and outside the home. They are not yet sure if Rory Geiger’s fatal wounds were self-inflicted or the result of a shot fired by a Sarpy County deputy.

“It looks like at this point, whether he took his own life or was shot by one of our people, there’s no doubt that their response and entry saved both of those girls’ lives.”

Davis said deputies found several handguns in the home.

“VERY GOOD TEACHER”

Mrs. Geiger was a special education teacher who had just started her 10th year at Westside High School.

“She was just a very good teacher,” Elizabeth Power said Westside Community Schools. “She was so good at making her students feel seen and loved so much and like they belonged here at Westside High School, which is so important for any student, especially her students.”

A crisis group has been created in the district. Consultants will work during the week.
