‘If you see something, say something’ – local police response to alleged killer of UnitedHealthcare CEO arrested

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – If you see something, say something. That’s the message one local sheriff’s department is pushing after the arrest of the alleged CEO killer made headlines across the country.

Authorities arrested Luigi Mangione, 26, and charged him with Monday’s murder in the assassination of the CEO of UnitedHealthcare. This happened after a McDonald’s customer in Altoona, Pennsylvania spotted him eating in the dining room.

Wood County Sheriff Mark Vasylyshyn said the McDonald’s employee did what any American should do when they see something suspicious.

“Many of the FBI’s 10 most wanted are people who see someone, say, ‘Wow, that looks like this person,’ and call them in,” Sheriff Vasylyshyn said.

If you’re not sure if it’s something worth looking into, we still recommend picking up the phone. The sheriff said it’s better for someone to call and not find anything than to find out a person has committed a serious crime.

Many police and sheriff’s departments, including the NYPDuse their social media accounts to show photos of wanted criminals. In that case, the NYPD even offered a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.

Authorities say a McDonald’s patron recognized the alleged shooter from photos shared on social media.

Sheriff Vasylyshyn said his department solves many crimes related to posting images on Facebook or their website.

“It’s amazing how many people can come forward and say, ‘I know who this person is,'” he said.

Another tip from the Sheriff: be aware of your surroundings and always know the nearest exit.
