Part of a human skull was found in the Arkansas River

The Wagoner County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) has confirmed that part of a human skull has been found in the Arkansas River.

WCSO said it appears to be the top of the skull, from eyebrow level up.

It is not known whether a crime was committed.

The sheriff’s office said when the river is low, it’s not uncommon to find human remains that are years old because the river bed changes location over hundreds of years.

Officials said rivers could flow through a cemetery or burial ground, stripping the top soil to reveal human remains.

The fragment of the skull was sent for forensic examination.

WCSO said it is awaiting reports on how old the remains are and if there was any trauma.
