Amesbury himself was a vocal supporter of Starmer’s response to the riots earlier this year, saying the “thugs and criminals” involved could face up to ten years in prison. He has also spoken out in the past against assaults on retail workers, calling for those who are assaulted to be “protected by the law”. Voters say that stance is now causing irritation.

“I think this man is an absolute disgrace and so is his leader (Starmer). It is clear that this is an unpleasant little man, a hooligan, who should be in prison,” says the owner of a local store.

“It’s aggressive behavior to me, and there’s a lot of aggressive behavior here, it shows he’s no better than others,” added Lorraine Ollier, 59, who works at a local community centre. “This is unacceptable behavior. People look up to him, so how can anyone look up to someone who behaves violently? I think this is completely unacceptable behavior and it is disgusting. Someone has to do something, you can’t allow this kind of behavior.”

However, it seems that not everyone is impressed. In fact, some in the area are quick to praise Amesbury and his actions over the weekend. “I’m not worried at all, I like to see leaders with backbone and backbone,” says Steve Hart, 65, a retiree.

“I think he should have spun (hit) him. If someone came up and hit you, you’re not going to put up with it – this guy pounced on him and knocked him down. Of course he (Amesbury) should remain in Parliament, let’s hope he does a good job in office.”
