Police arrest alleged driver who hit and killed 70-year-old New Jersey woman

A North Jersey man is accused of driving a car through Teaneck two weeks ago hit a 70-year-old woman, who later died in hospitalauthorities said on Monday.

Police arrested Jevon Bryant, 35, of Teaneck, on Saturday after they spotted a white Honda sedan speeding away from Bernardita Garcia, the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office said.

Bryant’s attorney was not listed in court records. He is charged with leaving the scene of a fatal road accident, creating a danger for the victim, obstructing justice and violating traffic rules, the agency reports.

Prosecutor Anthony Talarico is representing the state in the case, records show. Talarico asked Bryant to remain in jail on pretrial detention. His request will be considered at the meeting on Friday.

Garcia was found lying in the road near Cedar Lane and Lincoln Place around 7 p.m. on Nov. 21 after he was allegedly hit by Bryant’s car. Earlier, police said she was taken to Holy Name Hospital, where she died.

Police learned that a white sedan hit Garcia as she was crossing the street.
