Man jailed for manslaughter pleads guilty to firearms charge

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – A man serving time in prison for injuring one person and killing another pleaded guilty Monday in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court to firearms charges.

Attorneys are recommending 18 months in prison for Kevon Williams, 33, who pleaded guilty before Judge Anthony Donofrio to a charge of third-degree felony possession of a firearm.

Sentencing will be delivered at a later date.

The reports said police arrested Williams on April 5 after officers stopped the car he was driving at about 10:30 Friday evening at Hillman Street and West Avondale Avenue for making an improper turn.

Williams and the female passenger told police there were no weapons in the car, according to reports. According to reports, Williams told police the car belonged to a woman and she tried to find the license plate number in her purse but was unable to.

When asked for permission to search the car, Williams said it was not his car and the woman would not give permission. Reports say she looked into the glove compartment to check in, but when she did, she slipped a piece of clothing inside. When the police asked her to remove her clothes, they saw a .22 caliber handgun inside.

The woman told police the gun belonged to Williams and he had put it in the glove compartment when they were stopped. During a search of Williams, police found Suboxone in one of his pockets, reports said.

Williams was accused of shooting a man at a market on Lansdowne Boulevard on Dec. 4, 2012, and killing 26-year-old David Jackson, whose body was found in February 2013 in a heavily wooded area on Sharon Line on the East Side.

Police said at the time that Jackson was killed and the other man shot because they were involved in a robbery with Williams and they lost his profits.

Part of Jackson’s body was found by the man’s dog, and the same man’s other dogs recovered several bones from the skeleton. Police bought a cadaver dog from another law enforcement agency, but that dog never found Jackson’s remains.

DNA was used to identify the bones.

In February 2015, Williams pleaded guilty to felonious assault, involuntary manslaughter and abuse of a corpse and was sentenced to 10 years in prison with credit for 407 days in the county jail pending resolution of his case.

Department of Corrections records show Williams was released from prison in November. He is now on parole.
