Officials will release new information about a Fresno police officer shot and killed during a homicide investigation

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — The Fresno Police Department is expected to release an update on the officer who was shot over the weekend.

The incident began when Interim Chief Mindy Casto says several officers responded to a ShotSpotter activation in the area near Platte Avenue and Eighth Street on Saturday. They would eventually find a man in the area dead from a gunshot wound.

EDITOR’S NOTE: The video above is from a previous broadcast and will be updated.

During the investigation, the suspect drove past police around 6:30 p.m. and began shooting at them, hitting a sergeant who was sitting in his patrol car.

Casto described the shooting as an ambush and said the suspect fired at close range.

The sergeant, a 21-year veteran of the department, was rushed to Regional Medical Center in downtown Fresno, where he is being treated for lower-body injuries.

As of Monday morning, he was still in the hospital.

The suspect was wounded in the return fire and died at the hospital.

The press conference will be held at 11:00. We will broadcast the event.
