Prime Minister welcomes first budget delivered by a woman and teases £240m announcement

Sir Keir hailed Wednesday’s financial event for being the first budget tabled by a woman.

“Young women and girls across the country will be watching,” he says.

“When Rachel Reeves gets up, she’s going to make history.”

Turning to what the details of the budget might look like, Sir Keir says the “doom loop” of the “low growth trap” will be set.

The days of “austerity and chaos” are over, he adds.

He said Ms Reeves would announce £240 million for local services to help people find work.

The Prime Minister continues to state that he will stop government waste.

The budget will prevent “devastating austerity”

Sir Keir says the country needs to be “realistic about the economic situation”.

“It’s not 1997, when the economy was decent but utilities were on their knees,” he says.

“And this is not 2010, when public services were strong and public finances were weak.

“We have to deal with both sides of the coin.”

He says that’s why he never committed to the previous government’s spending plans.

The Prime Minister said: “The Budget the Chancellor will present on Wednesday will prevent devastating austerity across our public services and prevent a disastrous course for our public finances.”
