College Avenue closes, housing issues remain

On Monday morning, October 28th, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation is preparing to close yet another parking lot, this time on Milwaukee’s south side.

Concrete barriers will appear at the College Avenue Park and Ride.

People living here in tents and campers will have to leave.

It comes a week after Holt Avenue Park and Ride closed.

Over the past year, the lots have doubled as a temporary home for those without one, like Rick.

Rick is a veteran living in a parking lot with his dog after hopping between hotels.

The state will now give him and others who live here up to 48 hours to leave.

“Where to send people? Are you going to criminalize homelessness?’ Rick asked. “So you plan to provide housing? Arrests?”

The city authorities report a sharp increase in emergency calls to car parks by 42% compared to the same period in 2023.

Meanwhile, Milwaukee The county says it is working to find shelter for those who have nowhere to go.
