People’s deputy lost the labor whip on Sunday, the party said he had been suspended “pending an investigation” into the incident.

Cheshire Police confirmed on Sunday that a 55-year-old man had been voluntarily interviewed in connection with the incident after officers were called to reports of an assault in Frodsham at 2.48am on Saturday.

“He has since been released pending further investigations,” the police said.

CCTV footage, obtained by Mail Online and released on Sunday, showed the two men facing each other before the man, believed to be Mr Amesbury, punched the other and continued to punch him on the ground.

It is not clear from the video what happened the day before.

This comes after various footage was released on social media over the weekend showing the deputy shouting and pointing at a man lying in the street.

“You’re never going to threaten me again, are you? You will never threaten me again, he said.

Last July, the 56-year-old was found guilty of stalking the MP at his constituency office in Frodsham, where prosecutors said he was seen peering through the glass and asking security guards about their level of security.

Mr Amesbury said he would “cooperate with any enquiries” but was “determined to remain an open and accessible MP to our community” after the first footage went viral.

In a statement on Sunday, he said: “I was involved in an incident last night after I felt threatened in the street after a night out with friends.

“This morning I myself contacted Cheshire Police to report what had happened during the incident.

“I will not be making any further public comment but will of course co-operate with any inquiries if required by Cheshire Police.”
