EC has filed a complaint against the man for EVM hacking

The Mumbai Cyber Police has lodged an FIR with the South Cyber Police Station against a man featured in a viral social media video falsely claiming to have hacked and tampered with Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) used in the Maharashtra Assembly elections. The FIR was registered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the IT Act on November 30 following a complaint by the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Maharashtra.

Representatives of the Election Commission (EC) identified the man as Syed Shuja.

The European Commission states that EVMs are autonomous machines that cannot be connected to any network, including WiFi or Bluetooth, which ensures their resistance to external manipulation.

It is also emphasized that EVMs are completely tamper-proof.

“In a similar incident related to false claims, an FIR was lodged on the EC’s direction against the same person in Delhi in 2019 who is absconding in another country,” the Maharashtra CEO’s office said in a statement on X.

“Delhi and Mumbai police are actively investigating this matter and are taking necessary steps to identify and arrest anyone in India who is in contact with such individuals or involved in these malicious activities,” an EC spokesperson said.

Such actions are a serious offense and no one involved will be spared, the official said.
