The Election Commission has filed a police complaint against a man who claimed to have tampered with the EVM

Amid opposition concerns over Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) following the Maharashtra poll results, Mumbai’s cyber police have registered a case of fraud after a viral video showed a man hacking and tampering with EVMs.

The case was filed on a complaint by the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Maharashtra.

“Social media users have circulated a video of a person making false, baseless and unsubstantiated claims of hacking and tampering with EVMs in Maharashtra elections by isolating the frequency of EVMs,” the Maharashtra CEO said in a statement. said in the application.

“Mumbai Cyber Police registered an FIR No. 0146/2024 at Cyber Police Station, Dakshin, Mumbai on November 30 evening against the person in this video after receiving a complaint from the Director General of Maharashtra. Violation filed under 318/4 of Bharatiya Nyay Samhita. (BNS), 2023 and also under Section 43 (g) and Section 66 (d) of the IT Act, 2000,” it added.

The poll body said that the EVM is a standalone machine which cannot be connected to any network be it Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.

“Therefore, the question of EVM manipulation does not arise. EVMs are fully tamper-proof. The Hon’ble Supreme Court has repeatedly trusted EVMs. The Election Commission of India has already published a detailed FAQ on its website to clear any doubts and myths about EVMs,” the CEO’s office said.

The statement added that an FIR was registered against the same person in a similar incident in 2019 on the instructions of the Election Commission.

It is noted that the accused is hiding in another country.
