police chase in West Allis; Accused Fox Point man hit 115+ mph

WEST ALLIS, WI52-year-old Fox Point man is accused of leading police on a police chase for miles before hitting stop sticks and being arrested. The accused is Darby Costello, he is charged with the following criminal cases:

  • Second degree reckless endangerment

  • Driving a vehicle to flee or attempt to flee an officer

  • Bail (four counts)

According to the criminal complaint, a West Allis an officer was on patrol the morning of Sunday, Nov. 24, and was informed of a FLOCK alarm for a vehicle driven by Darby Costello, the defendant, “who had multiple warrants for his arrest,” the complaint states.

The officer located the vehicle as it was traveling south on S. 63rd Street crossing W. Lincoln Avenue. The police officer then positioned his squad behind the accused’s car and activated his lights and siren. The complaint states that “the defendant did not stop, but continued to drive at normal speed. Then the defendant turned south on S. 68th Street and began to accelerate, reaching speeds of 90 miles per hour,” the complaint states.

The West Allis The officer pursued the defendant “when he accelerated and ran several red lights,” court documents state. During the police pursuit, “the defendant turned to go south on the northbound lanes of Highway 36. While traveling in the wrong direction on Highway 36, (the officer) could see a pair of oncoming lights that should have gone out of the way because the defendant’s vehicle was traveling at a high at speed against oncoming traffic,” the complaint states.

AND Racine County a sheriff’s deputy was able to successfully deploy stop sticks — and West Allis the officer “performed a PIT (Pursuit Intervention Technique) maneuver, which caused the defendant to pull away and his vehicle to stop,” the complaint states. After that, the suspect was taken into custody. Court documents say the chase totaled more than 17 miles and reached speeds of more than 115 miles per hour.

According to the criminal complaint, during the arrest, the defendant stated the following: “It was fun, wasn’t it? I’m going to be blamed for 200 years (pun intended), might as well have some fun, huh?”

Costello made his first appearance in Milwaukee County District Court on Wednesday, November 27. Bail was set at $50,000.
