I think I raped my girlfriend after a night of drinking with her

DEAR DEIDRE: AFTER my night with my girlfriend, I think I raped her.

I’m 26 and she’s 25. We’ve been together for a little over two years and we have a great relationship.

She doesn’t blame me for what happened and says it was the alcohol.

However, I am devastated to know that I have caused so much pain to the woman I want to spend the rest of my life with.

It all started after we spent a drunken evening with friends.

We left quite late, and as soon as we got home, we immediately went to bed and had sex.

I admit, I was so drunk that I misunderstood everything and didn’t hear how my girlfriend told me to stop.

She told me what happened the next day.

When we first met, she told me that she had been raped when she was a teenager and had suffered from nightmares and flashbacks ever since.

I have supported her in this as much as I could in the time that I have known her.

But I just made it a million times worse by bringing it back to the past. Now her memories are worse than ever.

She didn’t tell anyone about her past except me. Now she is nervous and on edge. She continues to cry.

I can’t help but think of myself as a rapist.

DEIDRE SAYS: Your girlfriend told you to stop, and while I doubt you needed to, pointing out how dangerous it is to drink so much that you don’t know what you’re doing, it was rape.

Being drunk does not excuse your behavior.

Regardless of whether or not your relationship survives, your girlfriend needs help dealing with the past rape and what happened to you, so ask her to seek support.

She can call Rape Crisis confidentially (rapecrisis.org.uk0808 500 2222).

My support package Have Been Raped? she will help too.
